Clearwater Florida is Getting Greener

Today many Clearwater home owners are looking for ways to be more "Eco Friendly" - from recycling to using green products when possible.  The desire is often there before the products. Local residents oftne tell me they'd like to be more "eco-friendly" but they aren't sure where to start.

Well, now it's going to be even easier for everyone to find more environmentally friendly products in Clearwater, Florida and everywhere else that has a neighborhood Home Depot.

   
Why? Because Home Depot is working aggressively to fully implement its new Eco Options program. They are working to get the best eco-friendly products into their stores for their customers. They invited all the suppliers of their 176,000 products to submit any "green products" they have for consideration in their Eco Options program. They were surprise when their suppliers came back with over 60,000 products for consideration.

Home Depot's goal was to find 6,000 products out of the 60,000 submitted that their customers would want to find in their local Home Depot store.  With so many options the Home Depot Eco Options team went to work determining the "real green products" from the "voodoo" ones.

        
 In the end, "Only 2500 of the products have made the cut to date. The proucts selected had to pass the muster with a man who fertilizes his own home garden with a liquefied worm paste product packaged in recycled soda bottles and fills his swimming pool with saltwater to avoid putting chlorine into the environment," said Ron Jarvis, a Home Depot senior vice-president who oversees the Eco Options program.

  • Front Load Washers that use less water;
  • Herbs & Vegetables sold in biodegradable pots that release nutrients into the soil;
  • A Flush mounted light that generates 70% less heat and uses 2/3s less energy than standard lighting; 
  • None of the wood products they purchase come from the endangered regions worldwide;
  • Solar powered landscape lighting;
  • Paints that discharge fewer pollutants;   

Home Depot Green Standards

Home Depot is committed to working with the Scientific Certification Systems, a private company that audits and certifies company "eco friendly" claims and they are helping Home Depot develop it's green standards to include:

  • the products environmental record over it's entire product life-cycle;
  • understanding the products it's efficiency;
  • as it relates to the products longevity; 
  • how sustainable is the production of the product;
  • how can it be recycled when it's no longer needed;

I applaud Home Depot for working to establish meaningful green standards. This is one of the challenges facing "eco friendly" consumers today - how to really determine how effectively green a product really is. I'm looking forward to learning more about eco friendly solutions we can implement in our home.

It's currently taking almost 4 months (109.67 days) to sell a home on average in the New Tampa Area.

How do you know it's a Home Buyers Market?  Whenever you have more than 7 months of inventory it's commonly accepted that you have a Home Buyer's Market.

  • In May with 47 sales and 393 properties for sale = 8.36 months of inventory 
  • In June only 14 properties sold which would be  28 months of inventory.

David Podgursky asked for a Realtor to volunteer to do the Mortgage Week in Review.Having never done a Week in Review I had no idea what I was getting myself into. That being said I would highly encourage you to volunteer sometime - everytime I participate as a volunteer in the community as a judge for a contest, a moderator for a group, a mentor to a newbie or now the Week in Review I realize all the hard work and time so many others graciously give to the Active Rain community for the rest of us - especially the Moderators (all named and unnamed).

St Petersburg, Florida Sunset Welcomes the The Blog Tour USA

The Blog Tour USA pulled into St Petersburg Florida about 8p.m. on July 10, 2007 just in time to catch one of our local glorious St Petersburg Florida Sunsets. Sandbars to Sunsets - we've got it all here! 

Sharon Simms and her husband George, were our hosts for the evening. They graciously opened up their waterfront St Petersburg Broadwater home to the men of Sellsius, Joe Ferrara and Rudy Bacharaty III, on this leg of their trip to meet bloggers across America. broadwater waterfront home in st petersburg florida

This was the first time I had gotten to meet my Pinellas County neighbor, Sharon and her husband, George.

She is currently the top Realtor on Active Rain, who until today I had only known though reading her blogs.  I affectionately call her "The Top Banana". I learned she is someone who has always used technology to improve the service she gives her clients and it was obvious how much we all embrace technology and have implemented it into our real estate businesses today to give our current and future clients a better experience.   boca ciega bay sunset st petersburg florida  

 We first inspected the new home being built across the street and enjoyed the view of the water and sunset from the 2nd story of the construction. Like typical bloggers we enjoyed capturing the moment for posterity and the Internet (are they not the same now?) - we also cracked each other up "filming each other"

Oh if this motor-home could talk the tales it would tell - the first clue is the sign on the door when you open it soliciting "Real Estate Confessions" - All I can say is what happened on previous stops - was not revealed - I believe we'll have to wait for the sure to be bestselling video - Bloggers Gone Wild - Real Estate Confessions from the Streets.

Of course it wouldn't be "home" without dueling laptops and real estate marketing material from their sponsors. (You got your monies worth as he made sure we got everyone's info including a Trulia t-shirt). Joe invited us to share in their tour by signing their keepsake life-size card.

Sharon invited us all in to get comfortable and get better acquainted - she and George provided fabulous food and drinks. We talked about so many topics and shared ideas and our opinions that the time together just flew.

We were all surprised and sad to find that it was already 1 am. (now July 11th). No one wanted the night to end and we all had early starts scheduled for today - but for me,

 I knew this was a rare opportunity to connect with some special people and learn from other leading bloggers and develop some new friendships - I knew I would be able to catch up on my sleep another day :-) Rudy and Joe are so friendly and down to earth - it's easy to see why people gravitate towards them. If you get a chance - it's worth the effort to meet them in person.  

 Here are some of the Sellsius pearls of wisdom Joe and Rudy share with us:

  1. Take advantage of all the avenues out there to promote yourself and connect with future clients (like Active Rain, Trulia, Your real estate companies website, etc. ) but never lose sight of building your own brand (translated: have your own blog and website too!); This needs to be remain a priority;
  2. That it's never wise to put all your eggs in one basket;
  3. Read, comment, visit other blogs and websites to learn new things about the business and how others are using technology to improve it;
  4. Keep your eyes out for "video blogging" - they believe it may be the next wave in real estate blogging;   
  5. That Content is king on the Internet - with Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. - approach your blog like a term paper and site authoritative sites when possible - you'll educate your self and your readers while being perceived as more relevant on a given topic.   
  6. Focus - you can't be all things to all people - get clear on your area or focus along with the tips above and you will see your Page Rank increase and your relevance increase - you will establish yourself as an expert in an area.
  7. Never forget to "take it to the streets" - don't build your business, your services or your blogs for an ivory town in some real estate office - always get your reality check back on the streets - in the real world.

So as I read a press release this morning that July 11th is also the one year anniversary of Active Rain, the wildly successful Real Estate Social Network (built around blogging) it's easy to see why... I would never have even known of much less connected with and met the men of Sellsius without Active Rain.

Who knows if I would have ever gotten to know Sharon or any of the other leading Real Estate Agents and Bloggers that I have developed friendships and professional mastermind groups with from around the country.st petersburg florida new construction in broadwater subdivision

I believe the power of real estate blogging lies in the fact that blogs can now delivers so much more real time information to the local consumers and they are responding to it positively. As Realtors, we also benefit by having access to so much more information and new ideas as well from other top real estate agents - so it is truly win-win and I'm glad I am a part of it.

In this case, Mark Thomas and his team of professionals at Skinee-Dip Pools & Spas, the largest Tampa Bay area Pool Remodelers and Pool Contractors in the 5 county Tampa Bay area inspected this pool and boy are our Home Buyers lucky they did! They know Tampa Bay pools since they've built over 3,000 since 1971 and do over 1000 pool remodels each year. Tarpon Springs, Florida is home to two of Pinellas Counties Public Parks:

A L Anderson Park in Tarpon Springs Florida

Two fabulous parks with two different environments - many things to do.   A. L. Anderson Park is almost 130 acres of green space in Northern Pinellas County and has a distinctive hilly terrain and long nature trail and boardwalk along Lake Tarpon and Salmon Bay. It has a playground for kids and a paw ground for dogs. It has large areas of ample picnic tables. This park officially opened in 1982 and is named after a former commissioner who was a fisherman and also won several conservation awards.  

 Today I want share some of my favorite things about A L Anderson Park in Tarpon Springs are:

  • The public boat ramps for easy access to freshwater boating, jet skiing and more - the large parking lot is appreciated on busy holidays and weekends;
  • It has an elaborate Paw Playground for man's best friend - the dog complete with fire hydrants, water and more;
  • Playground for kids as well that overlooks the lake and hilly terrain.
  • It has several shaded picnic shelters -  Bar-B-Ques, Family Picnics and Birthday Parties are a few of the uses that come to mind; One sits overlooking Lake Tarpon.
  • Public restroom facilities are kept neat in clean in my experience;

About Lake Tarpon: We are blessed to have Lake Tarpon located in Northern Pinellas County. This large popular freshwater lake is 5 miles long and one mile wide and is 8 to 12 feet deep on average so it can handle powerboats, jet skis as well as canoes and kayaks.   

About Lake Seminole: This a large freshwater lake is found in the center of Pinellas County - close to the cities of Largo, Seminole and Pinellas Park.
Lake Seminole was actually created in the 1940s and has been used extensively since then for boating, skiing and fishing.

Since late 2003 the county implemented a $5 per day Boat Trailer Parking Fee or if you are a frequent boater you may opt for the $100 annual pass. Otherwise the parks are FREE.

Fishing in Pinellas County - You need a Florida Fishing License

Did you know that regardless of where you're fishing or what you're fishing for you need a license to fish in Florida.
