Largo Florida Home Buyer Celebrations
Yesterday was a special day. One of our clients who bought a Largo Pool home recently had a house-warming party with friends and neighbors and invited us to be a part of it.
We had worked with this family for over a year to find the perfect home. Leah Ross, the best mortgage professional we know, also helped them with their Mortgage and did a great job and was at the party. As you can see even my 2 boys got to give the pool a test drive - they gave it two thumbs up.
Getting to share moments like these are the really special parts of our job. As we have said before, we don't do closings - we do Celebrations. We are fortunate to build long-term relationships with our clients and they often become special friends -that is the case here.
Knowing my family would be there from the late afternoon into the evening I changed my voicemail to let anyone who called know my plans and it also allows me to focus on enjoying this get together.
My real-time voice message was something like this...
"Hello, You've reached Cyndee Haydon with Belloise Realty. It's 4pm on Saturday September 9th and Jack and I will be out of the office the remainder of the day celebrating with a family we just helped purchase their dream pool home. We've been invited to meet their family and friends at a housewarming bar-b-que and I'm sure you can understand that due to the party I won't be returning calls today however, I will return calls Sunday from 11am - noon except in case of an emergency." (which there shouldn't have been any)
Most people appreciate that I change my message daily and let them know when they can expect a return call. So this morning I got up and checked my voicemail at 9am (Sunday morning) before changing my message for the day and to my disbelief I got the following messages....
A message from 7:35am on Sunday morning from a sign call: "This is Mr Homebuyer, No I don't get it at all and I want to see a house you have listed at xyz address and I want you to call me as soon as possible." (In a terse and angry voice)
Another message at 8:00am on Sunday morning from Mr Homebuyer again "Just forget it, I got another agent to work with me so disregard my last message and don't return my call - they can arrange a showing for me"
Please note the time and date - Both before 8 AM on SUNDAY!While buyers may be scarce in this market - this one thankfully moved on. It's not like this person had called before and I hadn't returned his call - he was calling me before electronic lockboxes are even activated daily. For a moment I felt guilty and then I thought about it and realized that...
As much as I love what I do, I also believe life is too short to work with nasty people - my friends and family don't treat me that way - why would I let a stranger?
So if you know someone thinking of buying or selling a home in the Largo or Tampa Bay area you can feel confident knowing that as Real Estate Agents...
- We work hard for our home buyers and home sellers;
- We will treat you like we would treat our own family;
- We are available 7 days a week if needed;
- And can accommodate most requests;
But we do have a life outside of real estate though they often overlap and we do sleep nightly (though at times there are rumors to the contrary).
I hate to disappoint anyone, however, I've come to realize that not everyone is meant to be my client and that's ok. At the end of the day, when I see the joy and happiness of our clients experience in their new homes I can feel comfortable listening to the phone message above and peacefully saying NEXT....
I'm curious, regardless of the business you're in - Do you choose your clients as much as they choose you?

Cyndee... You were perfectly clear and I understood the sign call was a different house. What I don't understand is how some other agent can confirm to show your listing without talking to you or someone at your office. I'm also making the assumption that your office is not open at 8:00am on Sunday to set up appointments for you.
Dan - Exactly - Another Real Estate Agent couldn't know anything about the home except what's in the MLS at 8am in the morning - most things here don't go live before 9am.
And by the way after all that urgency- they didn't call to see it all day and while there's a lot of real estate on the market this is a unique waterfront piece of land so it's not like there are lots of others like it in it's price range.
Jason - Thank you for the compliment - those are all pictures I took at the party - obviously I had to test the pool too to get the underwater shot (LOL) - I threatened Leah within an inch of her life if she took my picture though (LOL)
I'm glad you enjoyed it and as sweet as you are - you got it (I've got a weakness for nice people :-))
Hi, Cyndee. Glad you and your family were able to share their Celebration! That's always fun.
Don't worry about your missed Mis-Opportunity. It sounds like that was your gain.
Cyndee, it is probably a blessing that he found someone else. Imagine getting that call several times a week when he thinks he found THE house. You deserve your time off and normal people understand that. The fact that you were with a client celebrating!!!!! Speaks loudly.
Yes, I choose my clients as much as they choose me.
Cyndee - Mr. Personality will probably stand up "the other agent" anyhow...NO SWEAT!! You were still sweet dreamin' it from last night's shin-dig!! How awesome to be invited to their HOUSE WARMING so they could show off you/Jack and Leah to their friends and family!! Excellent way to meet more advocates for Clearwater, FL for business at a future time! Congratulations all the way around!!
PS...Last night you gained everything!! This morning...you missed nothing as well as extra Zzzzz's as Mr. Personality harassed someone else on a Sunday morning! I know had it been an emergency...you would've been there in a heartbeat!
PSS...I love even more that Sean and Alex were able to enjoy your CELEBRATION with "past clients" that are now lifetime friends!! The pictures say it all...
Hi Cyndee,
I love your post! Your boys are so cute, did you use an under water camera...? I wouldn't feel bad about the "missed opportunity" sounds like it may have been a nightmare anyway. Congratulations on your "celebration" looks like you all had a good time! :)
Oh, I had better watch Leah's blog for a few days and see if she snapped a shot when you weren't looking! It sounds like these buyers are just exactly the kind of buyers that you need...not the other guy...
Next!
Cyndee another great celebration in Clearwater! When I was first starting out I had a buyer who would call me and shout out an address and expect me to have a price in under a minute. Once I was looking in the MLS by number only - street name only no luck. She then yelled "Ashley if you want to be my agent you have to do better than this". Turns out she was reading not only the street name wrong but the numbers as well. I ditched her fast after that call.
On a side note I am so glad to see two happy boys swimming! One who is now not afraid of the water.
That guys was definitely not worth your time. We choose our clients as much as they choose us....without a doubt. I loved your message by the way, It would have put a smile on my face for sure if I was calling you that day.
It just amazes me that some people think they are indispensable....where is the respect?
Stephanie - I agree - it's sad to say but some people think real estate ageents are just order takers (yep read it both ways) - we are consultants and advocates and ironically for the same money in the end someone like that is selling THEMSELVES short acting adversarial -
H-E-L-L-O - I'm on your side Mr. Buyer - I'm not the enemy :-)
Susie - As usual - you are so SMART!!! It's the reason we explain to people that the purpose of our business is referrals and being referrable means doing a fabulous job helping our clients achieve their goals -
Experience shows that both the product (buying or selling for best total value) and the whole experience have to be outstanding for people to be comfortable referring you - that's our purpose every day!
You're right - I'm still glowing as I think about the evening!
Many of you have supported us on Sean's quest to master swimming! Thought I'd share this video of Sean swimming since I couldn't get them to work the other day.
New Video of Sean swimming! :-)
Missy - you know we truly care about what's best for our clients and will even tell them not to buy a home if it's not in their best interest - we negotiate like it's our own money and so for me I do expect respect at a minimum.
We are blessed, even in this market to stay busy working with people who like our style and that's the good news plus it makes the hard work enjoyable because you know people appreciate what you're doing for them.
I got into a bathing suit and we made a deal -
"what happens when I'm wearing a bathing suit stays off camera" (LOL) ok
Here's the only approved picture - Alex took it underwater of me and Sean but my eyes were closed - :-)
Ashley - Ok - you've got me topped because at least I didn't have to have a conversation with this person like you did!
Sean didn't get out of the pool for hours on end - he's officially sprouted gills (LOL) - Did you watch the video above in the comments?
Ines - Thank you - Interestingly enough - clients that appreciate our client focused approach to real estate also appreciate that we have a family life and that we give whoever we're with, client or family, our undivided attention which means they will also have that when we're with them.
They also feel comfortable knowing that we are accessible and respond when we say we will - those that don't usually arent' a good fit for us and that works out well too.
Wow, and I thought the buyers that absolutely had to see a home on Thanksgiving were inconsiderate. Calling at 7:30 on a Sunday morning is awful! Sounds like he is a control freak.
Congrats on your GOOD clients!
Cyndee, you are WAY better off not having this guy as a client. I would be tempted to call him back and tell him where to shove it. ERRRR!!!!!!!!!
Cyndee,
I love your client celebrations. Connecting with your Largo buyer closely enough to be invited to his housewarming party says a lot for you as an agent. Missing Mr. Miserable helped you build more of a relationship with your buyer who will probably refer you to his friends in the future. I am learning that building relationships is key in this business.
Cyndee,
What a great story about your buyers and the housewarming party, I smell a referral along with the Bbq sauce, you deserve it. In regards to the phone call I would not loose my time thinking about it at all. Have a great Monday!
Elaine - we are so accomodating and meet most request - the key is working with people that "want to work with us"! I guess I should be thankful for voicemail as someone said it caused him to move on.
First off...love the post! Thanks for the love ;) It was such a great party and I appreciate there were no "unauthorized" photgraphs posted..teehee!
Second...this guy is a shmuck! You and Jack are the hardest working REALTORS out there. He is a (bad word) and he doesn't even deserve to work with someone of your caliber. That goodness you received both of his jack (bad word) messages before you had the opporunity to call him back and had to waste an ounce of time with someone so ignorant.
(Rant complete).
xoxo
Cyndee,
Real time voice mail has been a huge part of my customer service. As you said, most absolutely love it. And if they don't that's o.k. with me. Find someone else to work with, be my guest. I can honestly say I am not a 24/7 Realtor. As a fellow BRO person, I work with those who know me, like me and trust me.
I think it's lucky for you this this jerk called so early. otherwise you may have been stuck with him for a while. If he acts like this in the intital call I can't imagine things would get better...NEXT.
in a time where buyers are hard to find, it always hurts to send one off into the sunset - especially due to their own crappy attitudes
another broker I worked with put her hours on her cell.. that she was in the office for clients from 8am to 8pm and any call after 8pm would be returned the next day
my mother taught me at an early age that you just don't butt your nose into someone's personal time like that.... there are hours that after which you do not call people and before which you're just going to tick them off! :)
Cyndee:
This post rates a 5 and should be a featured one. Thanks for exemplifying the type of client we should all avoid.
Looks like a fun time was had by all at the celebration!
What a real jack A** (did I say that outloud) oops!
OK it is SUNDAY morning... as you mentioned the lock boxes weren't even open yet (duh ,"Guess your STELLER agent you got there 'Mr Crotchity' forgot to tell you that! humm?", and this man clearly needed to be somewhere ELSE on Sunday morning beside looking at houses... LIKE CHURCH!!!!
This man is CLEARLY NOT A STAR CLIENT, but this IS A 5 STAR POST!!!
