Great information Cyndee.  There's good and bad in this, I guess.  It'll help protect people in the case of hurricanes, but will cost more up front.  Any idea of whether this will eventually cause insurance premiums to go down.

You get what you pay for. And believe it or not, sometimes quality costs more. Great heads up!

Cyndee, I guess in a way this is good news because it can help save lives during a hurricane.

Chris - that's the idea but we've yet to see any real relief from insurance companies here in Clearwater Florida. I do hope it makes a difference when Florida experiences more hurricanes since that is devastating and would be the real savings - keeping your home in tact - I guess only time will tell.

Kaushik - we've been hit by several hurricanes and most building codes are moving toward Miami Post Hurricane Andrew standards. The people it hurts are those buying or selling a home that needs a roof - now it's a BIG nut!

This is a great local post.  What home owners have to keep in mind is that if the new roof will keep them safer it is well worth it.

Suzanne - We are all hoping it's something we NEVER have to test :-) Luckily we just replaced out roof 2 years ago.   

Paula - Matt does a great job explaining it - trust me the State Statutes make my eyes glaze over. We've found they always go the extra mile to education their clients and prospects the way we do. We have found them to be one of the best roofing company in Tampa Bay.

Great information for Florida homeowners.  The video with a roofing expert really integrated well into the post and reinforced the information you provided. 

What a great resource!  Does this have anything to do with the new insurance rates in FL?

Rita - Matt is a great local Clearwater roofing expert (even though he serves all of Pinellas County) - his roofing contractors use the latest improved materials but he has people who do roofs the old fashion tradesman way. He does many of the large condominium associations roofing projects because of the great overall job they do. 

Renee - Florida has slowly tried to bring all codes up to post Hurricane Andrew codes and while we haven't seen any real relief in our homeowners insurance - I believe this is the state of Florida's way of addressing "risk" with more hurricane reinforced homes because when a roof goes in a storm I've been told you're looking at a total loss.  We've still got insurance carriers leaving in much greater numbers - cost is a secondary issue.

The bad news is for anyone in the process of selling a home that needs a new roof - it just got way more expensive so in this market they'll have a hard time selling it without a big discount.        

cyndee- you are always comming up with great stuff. I know that in Burbank Ca I think in either 2008, or it might be 2010  they are changing the law that anyone with wood shingles will have to replace the roof

This is information and news that everyone can use here in Florida.  The changes are so quick that most people can't keep up, and they rely on the professionals to give them up to date trustworthy advise. Nice post.
